NEW NORMAL

Interactive Video Art
2020

The term “new normal” has been used more recently to show the shifting culture of our world in times of the COVID-19 pandemic. Letting go of what is considered normal in the past and embracing the new kind of normal. For some, the word is associated with negativity like constraint or isolation. I want to shed light on a lot of other positive effects of this new idea. I was fascinated with how people create a sense of community in places they might not have considered before. In an apartment complex where individuality is usually embraced, people are starting to find ways to satisfy their craving for human interactions. Some did it by helping others do their grocery shopping, while some others are exercising with their stranger neighbors through their balconies. Hopefully, this kind of “new normal” can stick to the future. In line with Lev Manovich’s idea of new media, the interactive part of New Normal makes it interesting because viewers can “create and customize” the elements of this work to fit their ideal scene.
