CHIP & SLIDE
Brand Identity, Sustainable Packaging
2021
This project relies heavily on researching sustainable alternative for daily food packaging. I got to learned about different materials, specifically those that are recyclable, biodegradable like mycelium (mushroom) and what it really means to have those labels.
Some of the problems I see in general cookie packaging are excess plastic materials and bad experience design. The most common packaging is the one with printed plastic film wrapping a plastic tray where the cookies are stored. We've all been there trying to push back in a half-empty and flimsy tray inside the packaging. That was not the best user experience. Instead, I proposed the idea to still keep the functional tray feature, but changing it into a slider to allow easier navigation. The paper slider is attached to one opening of the box, lines around the inner part, and exits through another opening. Consumers can slide the paper to expose the cookie and tilt back the box when finished to store the remaining.
The materials used are cardboard for the box, paper for the slider, and biodegrable plastic for the window emphasizing the new mechanism. The box uses the smallest amount of glue to bind the side, while the top and bottom parts interlocked with each other. The box also unfolds nicely into one flat piece of cardboard for recycling.
