HIDDEN
BACKBONE
OF THE
FAMILY
Data Visualization
2020
Hidden backbone is a wordplay to the common idea of men being the backbone of the family, yet forgetting the hidden work of women like household tasks and child care that also support the family. After rigorous research and collecting big datasets, I chose to visualize the data by having each bar representing a country and color-coding the country depending on the region it's in. The filled portion is the time of unpaid work, the empty portion is the time of paid work, and the length of the bar is the total hours of work per day. It’s interesting to see how on average the total work time of men and women is similar, yet the pay difference is huge. As an extension to the project, I designed an interactive animation of each country’s statistics, presented in an augmented reality format.
Viewers can try the interactive demo version by downloading the Artivive app on Appstore and pointing the app’s camera to the poster.
